Towards the latter part of Incarnate, Ana participates in a masquerade held in the city of Heart. She wears a butterfly mask, just like the cover. The masquerade scene in Incarnate is one of the most memorable parts of the book, particularly because of what happens during and after the dance.

Masquerades began in the 15th century as part of the celebration of Carnival—a huge party that occurred right before the season of Lent. Nowadays, we associate masquerades with elegance, but the initial purpose of wearing masks was to become anonymous in order to release inhibitions. This definitely happens in Incarnate–the masquerade in Heart is not exactly prim and proper (but that’s what makes it fun!).

One of the most famous masquerades of all time (besides that scene in Phantom of the Opera, because I know that song is stuck in your head now) was held at the Palazzo Labia in the early 1950’s. It was held by Carlos de Beistegui, a modern-day Gatsby, if you will. The masquerade was marked by exquisite fashion, and it was referred to as the “party of the century”. Need proof? This party was the one of the last great events the Palazzo ever hosted. (Okay, fine, the party didn’t have anything to do with the Palazzo’s eventual lack of party-hosting. It was a matter of coincidence and a transfer of ownership.)

So there you have it! A little history of masquerades to go along with your reading of Incarnate.
