Summary: Ever since a plague killed off most of the human population, vampires have taken over and practically enslaved humanity. Allison has grown up loathing vampires, especially because they killed her mother. But when Allison torn to pieces by the monstrous Rabids, a vampire comes to her aid, and offers her a choice: she can die a painless death or become a vampire and continue to live. She chooses the latter. But how can she cope with becoming the thing she hates the most?

The Immortal Rules by Julie KagawaMy thoughts: I thought I was done with vampire books. There couldn’t possibly be any new ground to cover, right? Wrong. Just when you think you’ve read it all, Julie Kagawa delivers an epic, heart-stopping novel that will completely blow you away. The Immortal Rules is not to be missed, especially for fans of fast-paced thrillers.

The Immortal Rules is a hybrid in itself. Part paranormal, part post-apocalyptic, and part zombie novel, Julie Kagawa’s latest is a doozy! But don’t worry—all of these elements balance out perfectly; it never feels like there are too many sub-genres in The Immortal Rules. Julie Kagawa’s world-building is so solid that all of these different elements are completely believable (within the story’s context, of course. Let’s hope vampires never actually enslave humanity!). Speaking of building, the construction of the story must be mentioned. The Immortal Rules is a 500-page book it keeps your attention the entire time. The fast pace never falters, and every single page is essential to the experience.

Allison is a heroine that will stick with you for a long time—she’ll be in your top ten protagonists, even. This isn’t because she’s incredibly skilled with a sword (though that’s definitely a contributing factor)—it’s because of her emotional strength. Allison is, above all, loyal to her roots, and she doesn’t let her new lifestyle get in the way of that. Allison’s internal struggle is a great one, but she’s tough as nails. Readers will love her narration: there’s nothing better than reading from the perspective of a kick-butt girl with a conscience. I absolutely loved Allison, and I’m sure you will, too.

If you’re in a reading slump, or your socks need rocking off, pick up a copy of The Immortal Rules. It’s fantastic. Julie Kagawa’s new series is bound to be a hit.
