Short Story Saturday: Otherwise

Short Story Saturday: Otherwise

In an effort to help myself read more short fiction, I’ve started a weekly feature—Short Story Saturday! Every Saturday, I’ll give my thoughts on a story from an anthology. I’m currently working my way through Brave New Love, which came out in February 2012 from Running Press.

Short Story: Otherwise
Author: Nisi Shawl
Anthology: Brave New Love

Brave New LoveSummary: When adults started taking Likewise, something happened: they abandoned their lives and families to go live Otherwise. Aim and Lo, teen survivors, are on their way to rendezvous with a friend when they encounter some serious trouble on the road.

My thoughts: I was completely blown away by Otherwise. The world was remarkably well developed, considering the length of the story. I felt as if I truly understood the way things worked in Lo’s world.

The best thing about this story is the relationships between different characters. The bond between Aim and Lo is fantastic; it really reflects the world in which they live.

Otherwise is an unusual read, but it’s all the more memorable because of it.

  1. This one sounds quite interesting. I really love reading your thoughts on each of the stories. So many times I have gotten an anthology only to find I don’t really enjoy enough of the stories to make it seem worth it.

  2. Yay! Thank you for enjoying “Otherwise,” and for telling people about it. I’m so glad to hear Lo’s world worked for you. I’m hoping to write a sequel sometime this year.
