Short Story Saturday: One True Love
Welcome to Short Story Saturday! Every Saturday, I’ll give my thoughts on a story from an anthology. I’m currently working my way through Foretold, which comes out in August 2012 from Random House. All of the stories in this anthology will focus on prophecy.
Short Story: One True Love
Author: Malinda Lo
Anthology: Foretold
Summary: When Princess Essylt was born, a soothsayer came to prophesy about her future, as is tradition in the kingdom. The soothsayer warned that should Essylt find her one true love, she will be the downfall of the king. Thus, the king has Essylt banished to a corner of the castle, so that no man will ever lay eyes on her.
My thoughts: I love how storybook-like this story is! It reminds me of Sleeping Beauty, a little bit, both in concept and in the way it’s told. Malinda Lo is a fantastic storyteller, and though she had to cut a few corners (this being a short story), One True Love is an enjoyable read.
Malinda Lo brings diversity to the Foretold anthology with this short story (doesn’t she always? I love this woman!). Fans of fairytales and fantasy kingdoms will love One True Love.

So far this anthology sounds really awesome!! I think this is one I am going to have to pick up.
