Misery by Heather Brewer | Short Story Saturday

Misery by Heather Brewer | Short Story Saturday

Welcome to Short Story Saturday! Every Saturday, I’ll give my thoughts on a story from an anthology. I’m currently working my way through Foretold, which comes out in August 2012 from Random House. All of the stories in this anthology will focus on prophecy.

Short Story: Misery
Author: Heather Brewer
Anthology: Foretold

Foretold by Carrie RyanSummary: Alek has been in the grayscale town of Misery for as long as he can remember. Each year, the townspeople receive a Gift from the beyond. This year, Alek’s Gift is something he never would have expected.

My thoughts: This is my first taste of Heather Brewer’s writing (I know, I know), and I must say that I’m pleased! I love the way she maps out Misery’s story: the pacing is perfect and it flows from beginning to end. The ending is a bit abrupt, but that’s common with short stories. Plus, it works for Brewer’s story because of the world it is set in.

I enjoyed Misery, and I am now interested in checking out Heather Brewer’s other books!

  1. This sounds like a fascinating story. I can’t imagine the gift is very good if the title of the story is Misery lol!!
